China to Establish Electric Vehicle Manufacturing Plants in Nigeria – Envoy

China is set to establish electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing plants in Nigeria, marking a significant step in the strategic partnership between the two nations. This initiative was announced by the Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, during a recent meeting with Nigeria’s Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake.

Ambassador Dunhai emphasized the importance of deepening collaboration between China and Nigeria, particularly in leveraging Nigeria’s rich solid mineral resources, such as lithium, which are essential for EV battery production. He highlighted that Chinese companies are already active in Nigeria’s mining sector and expressed China’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s industrialization goals through the establishment of EV factories.

This development aligns with recent discussions between President Bola Tinubu and Chinese President Xi Jinping, where both leaders agreed to elevate bilateral relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership. The move is expected to create jobs, facilitate technology transfer, and position Nigeria as a hub for clean energy innovation in West Africa.

Minister Alake welcomed the initiative, urging Chinese investors to commit to full-cycle investments—from mineral extraction to processing and manufacturing—within Nigeria. He stressed the importance of local value addition to drive Nigeria’s development and reduce reliance on raw mineral exports.

The establishment of EV manufacturing plants in Nigeria is anticipated to significantly boost the country’s industrial sector, create employment opportunities, and contribute to the global shift towards sustainable energy solutions.
