Court Denies Ex-Kogi Governor Yahaya Bello’s Premature Bail Application

Justice Maryann Anenih of the Federal Capital Territory High Court has rejected the bail application filed by former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello. In her ruling, Justice Anenih described the application as premature, noting that it was filed when Bello was neither in custody nor formally arraigned before the court.

Bello is facing trial alongside two others in connection with an alleged ₦110 billion money laundering case brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The charges involve accusations of financial misconduct during his tenure as governor.

Justice Anenih emphasised that legal procedures must be adhered to in seeking bail, rendering Bello’s application legally incompetent. The case underscores the EFCC’s continued efforts to hold public officials accountable for alleged financial impropriety.
