Ekiti Airport to Operate 24-Hour Flights, Says Governor Oyebanji

Ekiti State Governor, Mr Biodun Oyebanji, has announced plans to enable the Ekiti Agro-Allied International Cargo Airport to operate round-the-clock flights, positioning it as a competitive air route.

Speaking during the March edition of his monthly media chat, Meet Your Governor, Oyebanji expressed optimism about the state’s economic growth over the past two-and-a-half years. He emphasised that the airport would become a key economic driver, attracting investors, boosting tourism, and facilitating the export of agricultural produce.

The governor revealed that discussions are ongoing with three major airlines to commence commercial flights, with at least two expected to begin operations soon. Additionally, the government is working on installing an Instrument Landing System (ILS) to allow 24-hour flight operations, a project estimated to cost ₦4.6 billion. If completed, Ekiti Airport will become the second airport in Southwest Nigeria, after Lagos, to have such a facility.

Governor Oyebanji also disclosed that a cargo shed is under construction at the airport to serve as a storage facility for farm produce and cash crops. He commended Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele for securing federal budgetary support for the project.

Highlighting economic progress under his administration, the governor noted an increase in the state’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) from ₦600 million to over ₦2 billion monthly. He attributed this growth to improved tax compliance, an enabling business environment, and government transparency.

Addressing concerns about local government funds, Oyebanji assured residents that allocations are publicly disclosed and directly transferred from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). While he does not interfere with fund distribution, he monitors council projects to ensure they align with public needs.

The governor reaffirmed his commitment to statewide development, countering claims that progress is concentrated in Ado-Ekiti. He pledged to continue working for the people until the last day of his tenure, undistracted by political manoeuvres.
