The Ekiti State Government has allocated over N1.17 billion as running grants for primary, secondary, technical colleges, and special schools across the State for the 2024/2025 academic session. Commissioner for Information, Rt. Hon. Taiwo Olatunbosun, disclosed this in Ado-Ekiti, highlighting the government’s additional investment of over N11.3 billion on the renovation and construction of facilities in 203 public secondary schools under the World Bank-supported AGILE project. He further revealed that N6.1 billion was paid as counterpart funding to the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) for projects in 927 public primary schools, alongside funds allocated for instructional materials and assessment documents.
Giving a detailed breakdown, Olatunbosun stated that secondary schools received N602.3 million for the current session, while primary schools and technical colleges were granted N381.2 million and N10.7 million respectively. He also emphasized the government’s monthly expenditure of over N15 million for the feeding, maintenance, and rehabilitation of students in the State’s three special schools, which now benefit from upgraded facilities and services of professional therapists for pupils with disabilities. In addition, the government has renovated over 1,100 classrooms, constructed 83 new ones, provided boreholes, modern toilets, science laboratories, libraries, and multipurpose halls, while distributing nearly 3,000 units of furniture and learning materials.
The Commissioner called on residents, educators, and stakeholders to support the government’s efforts to provide inclusive, quality education, stressing the need to safeguard public property. He warned against acts of corruption and misrepresentation by school authorities, noting that damaging or neglecting public facilities poses safety risks and hampers development. Olatunbosun urged collective responsibility in protecting educational investments, cautioning that violators would face strict legal consequences.
