In a strategic move to ensure food sufficiency, the Ekiti State government has established storage facilities across the state to buy and store farm produce during harvest seasons. These facilities are intended to release stored produce during periods of scarcity, thereby stabilizing food supply and prices. This initiative aims to protect both farmers and consumers from the adverse effects of food shortages.
Governor Biodun Oyebanji, who led an inspection of one such facility in Ado-Ekiti on Monday, highlighted the government’s commitment to preventing a repeat of last year’s food scarcity. He emphasized that the storage facilities are part of a broader plan to enhance food security and support the agricultural sector. The governor reiterated the importance of these facilities in mitigating the impact of seasonal food shortages.
Governor Oyebanji also outlined the government’s immediate focus on addressing food shortages, reducing post-harvest losses, and ensuring year-round food sufficiency. By safeguarding surplus produce, the state aims to create a more resilient food supply chain, benefiting farmers with better prices and ensuring consistent availability of food for residents.
