The Federal Government has declared a seven-year suspension on the establishment of new federal tertiary institutions across Nigeria. The decision was announced on Wednesday by the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, following the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting presided over by President Bola Tinubu.
According to the minister, the moratorium applies to universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education. He noted that the move is aimed at redirecting attention and resources toward improving the standards of existing federal institutions.
Alausa stressed that the government’s priority is to address the significant decline in infrastructure and workforce quality within the nation’s tertiary education system, ensuring that current institutions are adequately equipped before new ones are created.
