The Federal Government has reiterated its commitment to reducing the carbon footprint in Nigeria’s aviation sector, aligning with the International Civil Aviation Organisation’s (ICAO) “Leave No Country Behind” initiative. Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, made this known on Tuesday while receiving members of the House Committee on Aviation in Abuja.
Keyamo noted that although Nigeria contributes only 2.5 per cent to global CO₂ emissions as of 2015, the nation is actively participating in global efforts to transition into a greener aviation industry. He emphasised that Nigeria is not left out of international collaboration, with developed nations carrying the country along in the sustainable transition.
However, the minister highlighted the significant cost implications of this transition, particularly in developing infrastructure and conducting research for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). He described these challenges as a major hurdle for a Third World country like Nigeria but affirmed the government’s resolve to pursue environmentally sustainable aviation practices.
