The Federal Government has reaffirmed that its ongoing agricultural reforms aim to ensure that food is available, affordable, and accessible to all Nigerians. This was made known by the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, during a media briefing in Maiduguri.
Kyari outlined several government-led interventions designed to combat food insecurity and stimulate economic recovery. He noted that the ministry has adopted a multi-faceted approach to address challenges such as insecurity, flooding, and reliance on imported staples, particularly wheat and rice.
To reduce Nigeria’s dependence on imported wheat—currently over six million tonnes annually—the minister revealed the launch of a national wheat farming programme. This initiative, he said, is a major step toward achieving long-term food self-sufficiency.
