FG to Activate Surveillance for Passengers from China Amid Respiratory Virus Surge

The Federal Government announced on Sunday plans to implement surveillance measures for inbound passengers from China, in response to a surge in cases of a respiratory virus. The move comes amid reports of overcrowded hospitals, emergency measures, and public concern in China due to the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV).

The virus, which primarily affects children, has seen a significant increase in cases across northern Chinese provinces this winter. The situation has prompted neighbouring countries, including Cambodia, Taiwan, and Hong Kong, to closely monitor the outbreak and its potential spread.

In light of these developments, the Nigerian government is stepping up precautionary measures to prevent the importation and spread of HMPV within its borders, ensuring the safety and health of its citizens.
