Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, has granted state pardon to 31 inmates serving various sentences in the Nigerian Correctional Service. The move follows recommendations from the State’s Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy.
The Council, chaired by the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dayo Apata SAN, reviewed 534 applications before presenting its final list. Apata disclosed this in Ado-Ekiti on Thursday, citing Section 212 of the 1999 Constitution, which empowers the governor to exercise such clemency.
The breakdown includes two inmates granted full pardon, five death sentences commuted to life imprisonment, and two others reduced to fixed prison terms. Additionally, four life sentences were commuted to five and ten-year terms, while 18 inmates with less than six months remaining on their sentences are to be released immediately.
