A coalition of human rights and community-based organisations across Nigeria has named Ekiti State Governor, Abiodun Oyebanji, as the 2024 Governor of the Year. The Nigerian Human Rights Community (NIHRCO), comprising 130 civil society groups, announced the honour following its General Congress meeting in Lagos. The coalition commended Oyebanji for his transparency, promotion of human dignity, and efforts in peacebuilding, noting his potential as a national leader.
Governor Oyebanji was particularly praised for his initiatives benefiting People with Disabilities (PWD). His administration established Nigeria’s first PWD therapeutic centre, equipping it with modern therapeutic and educational tools, and supporting over 300 individuals with disabilities. The coalition also highlighted Oyebanji’s effective governance, citing Ekiti’s political stability, improved healthcare infrastructure, and commendable public fund management.
In addition to his achievements, the coalition recognised the contributions of Dr. Olayemi Oyebanji through her Widows, Aged, and Orphans Hope (WAOH) Support Foundation. Her efforts have provided scholarships to 50 pupils and empowered over 300 widows and orphans. Oyebanji’s leadership has positioned Ekiti as a model state in good governance, transparency, and social welfare.
