The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has warned that funding constraints could undermine logistics and security preparations for the 2027 general elections.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, gave the warning on Wednesday in Owerri, Imo State, during the sixth Conference and Retreat for Senior Police Officers. He stressed that adequate funding was essential for the deployment of personnel, electoral materials and other operational resources.

Amupitan said inadequate logistics could disrupt the electoral process even where security agencies successfully maintain peace. He urged relevant authorities to provide the necessary resources and highlighted the role of the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security in coordinating INEC and security agencies.

Meanwhile, Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Disu, warned police officers against taking sides, colluding with political actors, harassing voters or abusing their powers during the elections.

He said officers found culpable would be investigated and punished, adding that the police would conduct joint exercises with INEC and other security agencies to strengthen coordination.

The presidential and National Assembly elections are scheduled for January 16, 2027, while the governorship and State House of Assembly elections will hold on February 6. INEC’s official election calendar confirms the dates.
