Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has reportedly been killed, according to confirmations from Iranian state-linked media outlets.
The country’s semi-official Tasnim News Agency and Fars News Agency announced his death early Sunday, marking a major political development with far-reaching implications for Iran and the wider Middle East.
The announcement came hours after the United States and Israel publicly disclosed that the Iranian leader had died following coordinated military strikes.
U.S. President Donald Trump stated that Khamenei was killed by missiles launched in a joint US-Israeli operation, though detailed operational information and independent verification of the circumstances surrounding the strike remain limited.
In response to the development, the Iranian government declared a nationwide period of mourning lasting 40 days to honour the late Supreme Leader.
Authorities also announced seven days of public holidays across the country, as security agencies heightened alert levels amid concerns over possible regional tensions and internal reactions following the death of one of Iran’s most powerful and influential political and religious figures.
