NLC Rejects FG’s Plan to Regularise Electricity Tariffs, Threatens Protests

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has rejected the Federal Government’s plan to regularise electricity tariffs for customers in Bands A, B, and C, warning that it will mobilise nationwide protests if the policy is enforced.

In a communique issued after its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Yola, Adamawa State, the labour union criticised the proposed forced migration of lower-band customers to Band A, a move announced last Thursday by the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu. The communique, signed by NLC General Secretary, Emmanuel Ugboaja, condemned the government’s decision, insisting that it would impose unjust financial burdens on consumers.

The NLC urged the government to prioritise affordable and stable electricity instead of implementing policies that would further strain Nigerians amid economic hardship. It vowed to resist any attempt to increase tariffs without proper consultation and justification.
