Presidency, APC Dismiss El-Rufai’s Move to Unseat Tinubu in 2027

The Presidency and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) have dismissed former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai’s defection to the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and his efforts to rally opposition figures against President Bola Tinubu’s re-election in 2027. They described his move as an “inordinate ambition destined to fail,” insisting that it would not pose a significant threat to the ruling party.

El-Rufai officially announced his departure from the APC yesterday, citing dissatisfaction with the party’s leadership. He vowed to mobilise support against the Tinubu administration, positioning the SDP as a viable alternative in the next general election. His defection has sparked political reactions, with observers questioning its potential impact on the APC’s dominance.

Despite El-Rufai’s declaration, the APC has maintained confidence in its electoral strength, dismissing his efforts as inconsequential. Party officials argue that Tinubu’s administration remains solidly backed by key stakeholders and the electorate, making any opposition coalition unlikely to succeed.
