In a nationwide broadcast on March 18, 2025, President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State, citing escalating political instability and recent acts of pipeline vandalism. The President announced the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu, and all members of the State House of Assembly for an initial period of six months. This decisive action aims to restore order and ensure the safety of the state’s residents.
The declaration follows a series of alarming events, including the demolition of the State House of Assembly in December 2023, which has yet to be rebuilt, leading to a legislative standstill. Additionally, recent incidents of pipeline vandalization by militants have exacerbated the crisis, threatening both the state’s governance and national economic interests. President Tinubu emphasized that these developments necessitated extraordinary measures to restore peace and security in Rivers State.
To manage the state’s affairs during this period, the President appointed retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas as the sole administrator. The federal government has assured that the judicial arm of Rivers State will continue to function unaffected, maintaining the rule of law and order. This intervention underscores the federal government’s commitment to upholding constitutional governance and safeguarding the well-being of Rivers State residents.
