The Nigerian House of Representatives has urged the federal government to investigate the rising frequency of boat accidents across the nation. This follows recent incidents, including a tragic accident in Kogi State, which resulted in numerous casualties. Lawmakers highlighted poor vessel maintenance, overloading, and weak safety enforcement as major causes.
They called for stricter regulations from maritime agencies and improved safety measures to prevent future tragedies. Additionally, the House tasked relevant committees to oversee the enforcement of maritime safety standards.
Efforts are also being directed at sensitising the public on safe water transportation practices to reduce accidents and enhance trust in the sector.
