Senate Orders Suspension of Demolition Activities in FCT, Sets Up Probe Panel

The Senate has directed the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, to halt all ongoing demolitions of structures unless authorised by a court. This decision aims to address concerns raised over the legality and fairness of the demolition activities under the minister’s administration.

In a resolution passed during Thursday’s plenary, the Senate also established an eight-member panel chaired by Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin to investigate the demolitions carried out since Wike assumed office. The panel is tasked with assessing the compliance of the demolitions with due process and existing regulations.

The resolution followed a motion sponsored by Senator Ireti Kingibe, representing the FCT. She highlighted the need for transparency and accountability in urban planning enforcement to safeguard the rights and livelihoods of residents. The Senate’s actions underscore its commitment to ensuring that governance in the FCT adheres to the rule of law.
