SERAP Sues Tinubu Administration, NCC Over 50% Telecom Tariff Hike

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has filed a lawsuit against President Bola Tinubu’s administration and the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) over what it termed the “arbitrary, unconstitutional, unlawful, unfair, and unreasonable” increase in telecom tariffs.

The NCC recently approved a 50% tariff hike, raising the cost of a one-minute call from N11 to N16.5, 1GB of data from N287.5 to N431.25, and SMS charges from N4 to N6. SERAP argued that the tariff increment would exacerbate the economic hardships faced by Nigerians and violate their right to affordable communication.

The organisation is urging the court to reverse the hike and compel the government to prioritise policies that ensure equitable access to essential telecom services for all Nigerians. The lawsuit highlights growing concerns over the financial burden on citizens amid economic reforms and inflation.
