Tension in Ekiti APC as Oyebanji’s Second Term Endorsement Sparks Backlash

The recent second-term endorsement of Ekiti State Governor, Mr Biodun Oyebanji, is stirring controversy within the ranks of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.

A group of concerned APC elders and youths, led by Chief Olaofe Adeniran, has accused Governor Oyebanji of undermining internal democracy by setting up a 24-member BAO State Endorsement Committee to push for his re-election bid in 2026.

The committee, chaired by former Deputy Governor Abiodun Aluko, is being viewed by the group as a strategic move to impose the governor as the party’s sole candidate, contrary to democratic principles.

They claim Oyebanji’s actions demonstrate “disdain, disrespect, and flagrant disobedience” to President Bola Tinubu and the APC National Working Committee (NWC), both of whom have repeatedly emphasised the need for internal democracy within the party.

The group warned that if not checked, the governor’s approach could destabilise the party and threaten the APC’s dominance in the state ahead of the next governorship election.
