President Bola Tinubu has abolished the 5% excise duty on telecommunications services, reversing the policy in a bid to ease the financial pressure on Nigerians and stimulate growth in the nation’s digital economy.
The Executive Vice-Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Aminu Maida, disclosed the development during a media briefing in Abuja on Tuesday.
The levy, which covered mobile voice and data services, had faced widespread criticism from consumer groups and telecom operators, who warned that it would raise the cost of digital access and undermine businesses already grappling with soaring operational expenses.
