Ekiti State Commissioner for Information, Rt. Hon. Taiwo Olatunbosun, has called on old students of various schools to support their alma maters to complement the government’s efforts in improving education. He made this appeal while inaugurating a 25-member Central Planning Committee for the 50th anniversary of Igbemo Community Comprehensive High School, Igbemo-Ekiti. The anniversary, tagged The Great Reunion, aims to launch a ₦200 million Old Students Vocational Centre. Olatunbosun, who chairs the committee, reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to providing a conducive learning environment, highlighting various interventions, including World Bank-supported projects like AGILE and IDEAS.
He noted that no school in Ekiti, out of the 203 secondary schools, six technical schools, three special schools, and over 900 primary schools, has been left out of the government’s developmental projects. These include infrastructure improvements, provision of ICT and laboratory equipment, and specialised services for children with disabilities. Olatunbosun also emphasised the administration’s dedication to teachers’ welfare, citing recent promotions of graduate primary school teachers, car and housing loan schemes, bursary awards, scholarships, and conditional cash transfers for indigent students. He added that these initiatives have significantly reduced the number of out-of-school children in the state.
The Global President of the Old Students Association, Pastor (Mrs) Atinuke Ayeni, who inaugurated the committee, commended Olatunbosun for accepting to lead the team. She urged members to justify the confidence placed in them by working diligently to ensure a successful celebration. The committee, which includes key figures such as Alhaji Kola Bakare as Secretary and Prof. Afolabi Ojo as Alternate Chairman, has also set up four subcommittees focused on programme planning, publicity, fundraising, and security.
