BLACKOUT HITS FOUR STATES AS ELECTRICITY WORKERS SHUT DOWN BEDC FACILITIES
October 20, 2026
Power supply has been disrupted in Edo, Delta, Ondo and Ekiti states after members of the National Union of Electricity Employees shut down facilities of BEDC Electricity Plc over workers’ salaries and welfare packages.
The action, which began on Monday, affected the company’s operations as union leaders and management commenced discussions to resolve the dispute.
Meanwhile, commercial motorcycle operators and ticket sellers have clashed in Akure, Ondo State, over alleged multiple levies.
The riders protested a reported N7,000 charge for an emblem allegedly introduced by Akure South Local Government, claiming they had already paid similar fees. They accused revenue collectors of repeatedly demanding payments, disrupting commercial activities in parts of the city.
However, Akure South Local Government Chairman, Gbenga Fasua, denied authorising the levy, saying no proceeds had been remitted to the council.
Fasua said he had directed those selling the emblems to suspend the exercise pending clarification from Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa. He also urged all parties to remain peaceful.
