The Nigerian government has announced plans to discontinue its visa-on-arrival (VOA) policy, citing security concerns and inefficiencies in the system. Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the announcement on February 22, 2025, stating that the move aims to enhance border security and streamline the country’s immigration process.
To replace the VOA system, the government plans to implement a data-driven immigration policy that will require real-time clearance from Interpol, criminal record databases, and other background-checking agencies. This new system is expected to improve security screening and ensure stricter entry and exit controls.
The decision has sparked discussions among stakeholders, with some supporting the initiative for its potential to curb illegal entry, while others express concerns over possible delays for business and tourism-related travel.
