COURT APPROVES SUIT SEEKING MAXIMUM SECURITY FOR PETER OBI AHEAD OF 2027 ELECTIONS
July 28, 2026
The Federal High Court in Abuja has approved the hearing of a suit seeking to compel President Bola Tinubu to provide maximum security for the Nigerian Democratic Party’s 2027 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, ahead of the general elections.
The suit seeks declarations affirming Obi’s constitutional right to life and protection from threats, intimidation, harassment and politically motivated victimisation. It also challenges alleged threats made by Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo, asking the court to declare them unlawful and unconstitutional.
The legal action was filed by two lawyers and a non-governmental organisation, with President Tinubu, the Attorney-General of the Federation, the Inspector-General of Police, the Director-General of the State Security Service, the Commandant-General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and Governor Okpebholo listed as defendants. No hearing date has been fixed for the case.
