FG PLANS STRONGER TERTIARY INSTITUTION RANKING SYSTEM, TARGETS AFRICAN BENCHMARK

September 02, 2026

The Federal Government has announced plans to strengthen Nigeria’s national tertiary institution ranking system and develop a credible framework that could serve as a benchmark for higher education institutions across Africa.

The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, disclosed this in a statement posted on his X account on Tuesday.

The development follows the release of the Times Higher Education (THE) 2026 Rankings, which featured 24 Nigerian universities.

Alausa said he met with members of the Nigerian University Ranking Advisory Committee (NURAC) and the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) to discuss measures aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s ranking framework and improving institutional performance.

The minister said the government was committed to developing a transparent and credible ranking system capable of accurately assessing the quality and performance of tertiary institutions.

He added that the initiative would support continuous improvement in teaching, research, innovation and other areas while enhancing the global competitiveness of Nigerian higher education institutions.

The Federal Government is also seeking to position Nigeria’s ranking framework as a credible reference point for tertiary education institutions across Africa.
