INEC RELEASES FINAL LIST OF 18 PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES FOR 2027 ELECTION

September 14, 2026

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has released the final list of presidential candidates for the January 16, 2027 general election, featuring 18 candidates from 18 political parties.

The list includes President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress, APC; former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar of the African Democratic Congress, ADC; and former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi of the New Democratic Congress, NDC, among the major contenders.

The final list represents a reduction from the 19 candidates published by INEC in August, following the exclusion of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP.

The Accord Party is also absent from the latest list, while the Young Progressives Party, YPP, has replaced its earlier candidate, Chukwu Anita Zugwai, with Peter Agada.

Two women are among the presidential candidates—Ada Okwori of the National Democratic Party, NDP, and Nkem Okereke of the National Reform Movement, NRM. Four women are also listed as vice-presidential candidates.

INEC has scheduled January 16, 2027, for the presidential and National Assembly elections.

The publication of the final list marks another major step in the preparations for the 2027 general elections, as political parties and candidates intensify their campaigns ahead of the polls.
