Nigerian manufacturers spent ₦1.34 trillion on alternative electricity sources in 2025 as persistent power outages forced factories to rely on diesel generators and other off-grid solutions to sustain production.

Data from the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria, obtained by The PUNCH, showed that spending on alternative power increased by about 21 per cent, from ₦1.11 trillion in 2024 to ₦1.34 trillion in 2025.

The increase highlights the growing financial burden of unreliable electricity supply on Nigeria’s industrial sector, with manufacturers having to provide their own power to keep production lines running.

MAN data also showed that manufacturers’ spending on alternative power has risen significantly over the past decade, increasing from ₦25 billion in 2014 to ₦129.95 billion in 2016.

Although expenditure fluctuated in subsequent years, the figure eventually reached ₦1.34 trillion in 2025, underscoring the rising cost of self-generated electricity for manufacturers.
