OYEBANJI RAISES SIX ISSUES FOR DETERMINATION AS EKITI ELECTION TRIBUNAL HEARS SDP PETITION
September 14, 2026
Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, has formulated six issues for determination before the Governorship Election Petition Tribunal hearing petitions arising from the June 20, 2026 governorship election.
Oyebanji’s legal team, led by Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Dr. Onyechi Ikpeazu, filed the issues in response to a petition submitted by the Social Democratic Party, SDP.
Among the issues raised is whether the SDP petition is competent, given alleged violations of the Electoral Act 2026 and other defects contained in the petition.
The governor is also asking the tribunal to determine whether the petition is defective for failing to join the All Progressives Congress, APC, as a necessary party.
Oyebanji further wants the tribunal to determine whether the petitioners were able to prove that his election was invalid due to alleged non-compliance with the Electoral Act or corrupt practices.
He is also challenging the SDP’s claim that he was not elected by a majority of lawful votes and asking the tribunal to determine whether the party’s candidate, Adebayo Alade, should be declared the duly elected governor of Ekiti State.
Vanguard reports that Oyebanji also formulated five similar issues in response to the petition filed by the Action Alliance.
Meanwhile, the SDP is expected to open its case before the tribunal today as proceedings continue over the disputed governorship election.
